This is one of the most requested videos ever! How to Choose the Right Travel Backpack for you is very important when preparing for your travels. Whether you're travelling for a week or a year, you can use the same backpack as long as it's the right one for your body and has all of the features you're wanting in a travel backpack. In this video, Siya and I take you to SAIL, which is an outdoor adventure store where shop at before any big trip. We have been using the same travel backpack for the past 10 years, and wanted to get an upgrade. Our old backpacks did us well, but were missing several features that are important to us. We take you through the entire process of choosing the right travel backpack for YOU and the things to look out for when choosing that backpack that will become your mobile apartment and ultimate travel companion.

A big thanks to SAIL for sponsoring this video. We have been shopping at SAIL for years for our travel gear and are happy to partner with a company we love so much. All thoughts, opinions and reviews are our own.
The packfitter did a great job on the pack fit, she was so knowledgeable! But you guys only showed the hip belt, shoulder harness and sternum strap, but you completely neglected the very important LOAD LIFTERS! These help prevent your load from shifting around and keeps the weight off your shoulders. The packfitter did a great job on the pack fit, she was so knowledgeable! Very good video. We also made our travel video to Dalhousie | Khajjiar (mini Switzerland of India). Travel is the best way of practical knowledge and best healer of your mind.
Karrimor SF are releasing some awesome new rucksacks. I use several packs from their range, including the Odin 75 for extended trips. For shorter 'day pack' or light carry trips I use their 'Thor 40' and the built in rain cover is proving indepensable! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK7HCRpeGsQ&feature=youtu.be
So this type of pack is not always the best for traveling. These packs are great for adventure traveling where you will spend more of your time in the wilderness carrying a sleeping bag, tent, food, first aid, etc. They carry heavy weight well, focus more on comfort under load and less on accessibility, and are brightly colored for safety. There are better designs for urban travel that can actually do quite well on day hikes. In urban travel, you will want something that does not scream “I am a college student from America!” From my perspective, unless I am planning to do true back county trekking (which was something I did when I was much younger), these bags are not versatile enough for me.
I was wondering if anyone would know.. last year I Bought the Osprey Escapist 32 bag that I didn't get to use and I planed to travel with it and with a suitcase for couple of monthes.. now I'm planing 3.5 months in south america and I was wondering if I should've got a bigger bag for all of my things (and pass the suitcase) or use this bag as my main bag with another smaller backpack.
+James Guiab I have checked a bag maybe three times in th last 6 years and I don't do anything extra to my bag when I check it except put it's rain cover on it so the straps don't get caught on the belt
osprey and gregory are over priced, usually retailers will try to point you towards the more expensive items. Don't get me wrong they're good bags if you have the money for them. From personal experience I've found bags online that rival their quality and have a couple more features for less than half of the price.
Kristen Sarah I'm currently rocking a mountaintop 60L. For 59.99 I got water resistant fabric with an included rain cover, which I know osprey bags don't come with, not sure if Gregory bags do. Although it doesn't have the same warranty. In a period of three years it survived 500 miles of the Appalachian trail, as well as the Rockie Mountains, the grand canyon, Zion National Park, Yosemite and Hawaii. Its been trough some things and still holding up better than most relationships lol. I did find your review really informative for people just getting into backpacking tho, plus is really well put together.
+supersonic kid I've used many bags over the years that were cheaper but have found my Gregory to be unbreakable and if it does one day, they have a lifetime warranty :) which bag do you use? I'd love to know! Thanks for watching

Thanks for this video. I have tested a lot of bags, but I haven't been able to test a hiking bag. THis gives me so much of information. Now I just "need" a vacation where I need to use a hiking bag haha.
Great tips but two major flaws many of us face. Firstly, we don't always get the scope fo choice of brands or bags e.g. for me Fjallraven, or even a particualr model. Second, the sales staff ap[ear highly informed, rarely does that seem the case. Therefore a buyer has to become educated; and frankly a PhD in bags is required as there are far too many to choose from, and then we are faced with guessing when buying from the internet and that becomes a pot luck. Now to measure my back...this shouls be fun!
One more tip. Ones you found that pack you like, put some weight in it and see how it holds up. Almost any pack will feel comfy when empty, but it's not till you add 30lb you will really feel how all those straps and backsupport will feel on you. Most stores have sandbags they can add.
If I have a 75L backpack, and I plan to go backpacking across Europe, is it bad to travel with a mostly empty backpack? I hear a lot of people say its bad because you're tempted to carry things you don't need but is there actually any real negative to having a half empty backpack?
LOL!!! Siya's Nemo bag!!! lol...The magenta one is cute! But I do love the Aqua one you picked! Beautiful colour!...ugh but Siya's pick has the extra day pack and camel pack compartment... oh man...decisions!!!
Sail's my favourite too, I like it more than MEC. I just can never decide on a good back pack so always end up using regular ones which end up hurting my shoulders or making me sweaty... I'll have to go soon since I leave in a week and a half for my road trip! :)
Did you end up getting an x-small for your backpack and is it comfortable to wear? She mentioned your spine being about 16 inches, about how tall are you? I'm currently looking for a backpack to travel throughout SE Asia in but not sure if I should get an x-small size or a small/medium.
Once you're all packed, you know where you should consider traveling? U.S. National Parks! And there's lots to see and do, especially as the U.S. National Park Service turns 100 YEARS OLD! You can watch them all on this playlist (which will be updated throughout the summer!) https://youtu.be/6euyNab8Waw?list=PLlvHlI3rc2tOmjuV8G71HNTt3qzAa03So
