‘Happiness is heritable’: Professor Meike Bartels on the happiness gene

03:42
Do we have a happiness gene? As part of the World Government Summit in Dubai, Professor Meike Bartels of VU University Amsterdam explains her research on how to find – and increase – happiness Bartels is the author of a groundbreaking genetic study in the Netherlands, which found three genetic variants for the ‘happiness gene.’ Comparing identical twins to fraternal twins, those genetically identical to those that do not share all their genes, Professor Bartels found that differences between people are 40 per cent accounted for by genetic differences, and that individuals who are similar in their feelings of happiness, also have similar DNA. A 300,000 person study found the first genetic variance, so ‘we really know now where on the human genome that are variances that are related to difference in human happiness’, she says.

Happiness Is Good for the Genes

01:18
Scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of North Carolina looked into how positive feelings affect the human genome. There are a number of ways to be happy, but according to a recent study, some are truly better than others. Scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of North Carolina looked into how positive feelings affect the human genome. Even though it would make sense that all happiness is created equal, the researchers found distinct differences in the genes' reactions to how the good times were generated. Happiness stemming from one's deeply rooted purpose in life had positive effects. Gene make-ups in that group showed low levels of inflammatory attributes and scored high in antiviral and antibody strength. Smiles that came as a result of self-gratifying activities like buying stuff resulted in genes low in antiviral and antibody expression and high in inflammatory levels. In reaching these conclusions, the scientists examined blood samples from 80 subjects that they'd previous placed in one of the two satisfaction groups. The authors of the study said that both sets of people appeared to be equally happy and those experiencing consumption based positive emotions didn't feel any worse than the altruistic bunch. However, they noted, the human genome knew the difference.

Do you want to know the one word secret to happiness?

04:18
Do you want to know the secret to happiness? I can answer this question with just one word. It’s not going to make sense at first, but just hear me out and I promise it will be the best answer you receive today. You ready? The answer is…. Progress.. Confused?? It’s ok, either I didn’t understand this at first ! Think about it for a minute though and it all starts to click. Have you ever heard the story of the lotto winner who went from being flat broke to collecting millions of dollars, only to be severely depressed a few years later? Of course, you have! It's so popular they even made a reality tv series about it. Why do you think that occurrence is so common? The answer is progress. Or in their case, lack of progress. They simply peaked. They became millionaires and had nothing left to achieve. No reason to get up in the morning. No more goals to fulfill. No more purpose. They went from a life were progress was essential to live to a life with nothing to live for. Do you see the difference? Think about your own life for a minute. Ever have those lazy sunday’s when you get up, sit on the couch all day, and do nothing? How do you feel after that day? Now compare that to a day when you worked really hard on a project or successfully finished all of your goals for the day. How did you feel then? So why does progress make us happy? It all boils down to evolution. Whether we like it or not, we as humans are all hard-wired to evolve every day of our life. Evolution is essential to our survival. That evolution can take shape in many forms, but at the end of the day, that’s what progress really is, the evolution of ourselves. And when you are evolving, you are consciously taking control of your life and telling the universe “hold my beer, I got this!” Still not buying it? Go ahead and try me…. You might say, well family makes me happy! Of course, it does, but why is that? It’s because family is simply the evolution of your genes. It’s progress in the form of continuing your bloodline on for future generations. Some might say, I don’t care what you say, money does make me happy. Does the actual money make you happy? Or does the pursuit of the money make you happy? I would argue the latter. And why is that true? Because the pursuit of money is, you guessed it, progress. Hmmmmm….. I hope answer has made the point a bit clearer. The important take away here is that if you want to be happy, always look for ways to progress. Keep moving forward, one foot in front of the other. It does not matter how big or small of a progression you make, as long as it is in the right direction. ------------------------------------------------------------- background music: https://www.zapsplat.com/ background images: https://www.freepik.com/ Vector: https://www.freepik.com/ Sounds: https://www.zapsplat.com/ thumbnail image: https://www.freepik.com/ Everything else is royalty-free, commercially usable and resources that are no attribution is required. -------------------------------------------------------------

The Bedrock of Lasting Happiness - The Spoken Word

03:13
Researchers have been studying happiness for many years. Everyone wants to know how to be happier, and we wonder if there’s a hidden secret that science can discover for us. Recently an 80-year Harvard study, the longest study ever done on the subject of happiness, made a conclusion that probably shouldn’t surprise us: “Close relationships, more than money or fame, are what keep people happy throughout their lives.” Strong bonds with loved ones, the study found, “protect people from life’s discontents, help to delay mental and physical decline, and are better predictors of long and happy lives than social class, [intelligence], or even genes.” It’s no secret: our relationships matter. This idea may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget. Life has a way of isolating us. Sometimes it’s busyness that interferes with our relationships. Sometimes it’s jealousy or some perceived offense. We might feel that we have been treated unkindly or unfairly. This can lead to anger and resentment, further damaging the relationships that do promote happiness. To make matters worse, social media and other technologies have made many of those relationships more virtual than real. Through the filter of social media, we see people only in part, and we might wonder why our lives aren’t as successful or happy as everyone else’s life seems to be. And so we become anxious and unhappy. How can we push those negative feelings down when we feel them taking root in our hearts? How can we value and nurture the relationships that make us truly happy? We might need to take a break from social media and reconnect with the loved ones around us. We might need to remember that what we see of others’ lives isn’t ever the full story. We might need to forgive—and ask for forgiveness. And we might need to focus less on what we lack and more on the goodness and blessings that fill our lives every day. Money, fame, and social status come and go; they make for a shaky foundation for life. Instead, build your life on loving relationships, and they will be the bedrock of lasting happiness. Episode 4618. Aired March 18, 2018.

Finding--and creating—happiness | Jay Phelan | TEDxUCLA

15:04
Happiness can be fleeting and elusive, but from the perspective of evolutionary biology we can better understand its true nature. And from the surprising answer, we can draw unexpected insights about how to consciously structure our lives to make ourselves (and those around us) happier. Jay Phelan has been on the faculty of the UCLA Life Sciences Core Program since 1997, specializing in evolutionary biology, human behavior, and genetics. He received a Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard in 1995, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Yale and UCLA. He is co-author of the international bestseller, Mean Genes (Basic Books), and the author of the textbook What is Life? A Guide to Biology (Macmillan), as well as dozens of technical publications in biology and science education. He created the online adaptive testing website www.Prep-U.com. Jay has taught training courses for the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit since 2007. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, and he has appeared on ABC’s Nightline, CNN with Paula Zahn, the BBC, and National Public Radio’s Talk of the Nation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Tomato's Genetic Secrets Are Peeled Away

04:01
This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Scientists have made a genetic map of the tomato. Tomatoes are second only to potatoes as the world's most valuable vegetable crop. Eight years of work went into making the map, or genome. Three hundred scientists around the world took part in the project to sequence the tomato's DNA code. Giovanni Giuliano, a researcher in Italy, is part of the Tomato Genome Consortium. He says they started as ten countries and now have fourteen. Having the tomato's genetic map will help growers who are always trying to produce a better tomato. Mr. Giuliano says they now know not only what genes are there, but their order. Researchers published the genome of a tomato used by Heinz, the American food company famous for its tomato ketchup. Ketchup is a thick sauce used on hamburgers, hot dogs and other foods. Heinz's research manager, Rich Ozminkowski, says the company knows what it wants in a tomato. "Traits like sugars and, for Heinz, viscosity, or the juice thickness, and the redness of the tomatoes are all very critical traits for us," he says. Those are all controlled by a lot of different genes within the tomato. Mr. Ozminkowski says genome sequencing takes away much of the guesswork for breeders of tomatoes or other crops that have been mapped. In his words, "By having the genome information, we can pick out those tomato plants that have more of those genes." Until the late nineteen sixties, the tomatoes that Heinz used to make ketchup often cracked open on the vine after a heavy rain. Heinz wanted to to develop a variety that would resist that cracking. Breeders used the traditional methods of mating generations of different varieties. The tomatoes they were trying to develop not only had to resist cracking. They also had to resist disease. And they had to be easy to harvest mechanically. Finally the company came up with the tomato it wanted, called the Heinz 1706. Mr. Ozminkowski says the job would have been much easier if there had been a genetic map to follow. There were no genetic tools at the time. But the work today is not just about making better ketchup. Climate change may force many crops to adjust to new conditions. And Mr. Ozminkowski says researchers are already using the new genetic tools to help fight new plant diseases. The researchers published the tomato genome in the journal Nature. Should you be able to patent a human gene? | Tania Simoncelli

18:06
Are human genes patentable? Back in 2005, when Tania Simoncelli first contemplated this complex question, US patent law said they were — which meant patent holders had the right to stop anyone from sequencing, testing or even looking at a patented gene. Troubled by the way this law both harmed patients and created a barrier to biomedical innovation, Simoncelli and her colleagues at the ACLU challenged it. In this riveting talk, hear the story of how they took a case everybody told them they would lose all the way to the Supreme Court. Why are the Dutch so tall? BBC News

02:42
The Dutch are, on average, the world's tallest people, but it hasn't always been that way. So what happened? Scientists believe a number of factors are responsible, such as genetics, better diet and medical care. But now there's another theory. Research from the London School of Tropical Medicine suggests that natural selection may also have something to do with it. Jane O'Brien went to the Netherlands to find out more. Secrets To Longevity And Happiness From Holocaust Survivor Ed Mosberg

02:01
Ed Mosberg was born in Krakow, Poland in 1926. He survived Płaszów and Mauthausen concentration camps. He lost his entire family in the Holocaust. Here, he reflects on the meaning of life and what’s gotten him to 92. Ed Mosberg: There’s only one thing. You should stick with your family and with your friends. This is the most important thing in your life, when you stick with your family and with your friends. And like I always say to my wife, we are one life and we are here together. I do every day, making push-ups, sit-ups, hydraulic steps, I run on a treadmill, because I have to be fit for my wife. Anytime she need me, that I am there for my wife. This is my primary thing. Like this morning, I got up, I was 5 o’clock up this morning and I was on a treadmill. I make all the other exercise. It’s not a secret. Just be active. Not to overeat, okay? Because this is the worst thing. People are overeating. They say, “Well, I’m hungry.” You can control it. I tell you what I had this morning. This morning I had a glass of water, cup of coffee with plenty sugar and half a small yogurt. Yogurt, the small one, I take a half. And that’s all. And if I don't have a lunch, I can go like this ‘til the evening so long I have a cup of coffee. I don’t want you tell my daughter what I eat. This is not a secret to live to 92 and I tell you now, I already decided, I have a party when I will be 100. I have the date already. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. The Groupish Gene: Hive psychology and the Origins of Morality and Religion

01:26:51
Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by Green College. There is a near universal interest in morality that has sparked thought-provoking inquiry for thousands of years. Much of that inquiry proceeded without the benefit of modern cognitive science, but that is now changing. And the change promises to shed new light on morality, particularly its practices, development, and the psychology behind ethical thought. In this series we bring together speakers from a vast array of disciples--from philosophy and law to biology and psychology--to discuss cutting edge research in the cognitive science of morality. Dr. Haidt is a Professor in the Social Psychology area of the Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia. He studys morality and emotion, and how they vary across cultures. He is also active in positive psychology (the scientific study of human flourishing) and study positive emotions such as moral elevation, admiration, and awe. Dr. Haidt's research these days focuses on the moral foundations of politics, and on ways to transcend the "culture wars" by using recent discoveries in moral psychology to foster more civil forms of politics. Morality, by its very nature, makes it hard to study morality. It binds people together into teams that seek victory, not truth. It closes hearts and minds to opponents even as it makes cooperation and decency possible within groups.
