The secret to happiness

How much control do you really have over your happiness, and how effectively are you pursuing it? American Enterprise Institute President Arthur Brooks distills 40 years of social science research into a surprising set of answers. For more of Arthur's videos, click here: http://bit.ly/19HHPXU More Vision Talks here: http://goo.gl/MCA64c A conservative vision for social justice: http://goo.gl/guFGiK What works in helping the poor? http://bit.ly/1jukVIN What prevents the poor from reaching the middle class? http://goo.gl/zdJLxT #politics #news #government #education #happy #happiness #philosophy #psychology Partial transcript: If I do my job in the next few minutes, I'm going to give you the secret to happiness so that when you go home tonight you can start living a happier life, and you can start sharing with more people so that they can have a happier life too. So let's start with what we know about happiness. There have been hundreds, literally hundreds, of studies by economists and social scientists and psychologists about happiness, hundreds over the past thirty and forty years. And basically they all start by asking the question: who's happy? In the United States we know that all the way back to the 1970s a very stable proportion of the population is very happy. About a third of Americans say anonymously and in accurate tests an accurate surveys that they're very happy people. Okay, we have no reason to doubt that this is true. A little over fifty percent say they're somewhat happy, about 10 to 15 percent of the population is chronically depressed and say they're not very happy. Okay now, that's actually not the most interesting question. The most interesting question is what brings happiness. And we know the answer to that too. It's three things, three things bring happiness: genetics, big life events, and choices. And I'm going to tell you about all three, starting with genetics. Now, a few years ago social scientists at the University of Minnesota constructed a wonderful database that included seventy five pairs of identical twins born between the mid-1930s and the mid 1950s. Now they were separated at birth and adopted by separate families. It's like a social scientist's dream it's almost as if the government had done this. And at age 40 they were reunited and they were given a personality test, so they were asked about the things that were going on their lives and the way that they viewed their lives. This is really interesting because you've got DNA carbon copies of each other and they have different upbringings so you can net out the parts that are nature and the parts that are nurture, statistically, and what did they find? They found that 48 percent of their happiness is genetic. As a matter of fact they found that more of their personality was genetic than they ever understood before. Forty percent of how you vote is genetic, forty percent of how you worship is genetic, so this explains some things. Do you have someone in your life who is chronically happy? Do you have a coworker who's happy all the time? It's very irritating, by the way, and so it sometimes you wonder, that person is just happy all the time. What are they doing right? What's their secret? Their secret is their DNA. Are you a grumpy person? Are you dark and brooding. It's your DNA it's not your fault, you have lousy parents is basically what it comes down to. So if that's the case does it really matter what we do? The answer is yeah because if half of it is taken away from you you better get the other half right. Now forty-percent is genetic but there are other innate qualities, other innate characteristics that are really important, the most interesting of which is gender. Who's happier, men or women? Secrets To Longevity And Happiness From Holocaust Survivor Ed Mosberg

02:01
Ed Mosberg was born in Krakow, Poland in 1926. He survived Płaszów and Mauthausen concentration camps. He lost his entire family in the Holocaust. Here, he reflects on the meaning of life and what’s gotten him to 92. Ed Mosberg: There’s only one thing. You should stick with your family and with your friends. This is the most important thing in your life, when you stick with your family and with your friends. And like I always say to my wife, we are one life and we are here together. I do every day, making push-ups, sit-ups, hydraulic steps, I run on a treadmill, because I have to be fit for my wife. Anytime she need me, that I am there for my wife. This is my primary thing. Like this morning, I got up, I was 5 o’clock up this morning and I was on a treadmill. I make all the other exercise. It’s not a secret. Just be active. Not to overeat, okay? Because this is the worst thing. People are overeating. They say, “Well, I’m hungry.” You can control it. I tell you what I had this morning. This morning I had a glass of water, cup of coffee with plenty sugar and half a small yogurt. Yogurt, the small one, I take a half. And that’s all. And if I don't have a lunch, I can go like this ‘til the evening so long I have a cup of coffee. I don’t want you tell my daughter what I eat. This is not a secret to live to 92 and I tell you now, I already decided, I have a party when I will be 100. I have the date already. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. ‘Happiness is heritable’: Professor Meike Bartels on the happiness gene

03:42
Do we have a happiness gene? As part of the World Government Summit in Dubai, Professor Meike Bartels of VU University Amsterdam explains her research on how to find – and increase – happiness Bartels is the author of a groundbreaking genetic study in the Netherlands, which found three genetic variants for the ‘happiness gene.’ Comparing identical twins to fraternal twins, those genetically identical to those that do not share all their genes, Professor Bartels found that differences between people are 40 per cent accounted for by genetic differences, and that individuals who are similar in their feelings of happiness, also have similar DNA. A 300,000 person study found the first genetic variance, so ‘we really know now where on the human genome that are variances that are related to difference in human happiness’, she says.

Dr. Candace Pert is a trailblazing scientist whose work has centered on neuropeptides released by our brain. These biological messengers communicate constantly with every tissue, organ and part of our body. That means our feelings are really chemicals that can either help us or hurt us. Dr. Pert tells us that emotions are the key to everything, including health and disease, which is why it is so important to love and accept ourselves just as we are.

Do you want to know the one word secret to happiness?

04:18
Do you want to know the secret to happiness? I can answer this question with just one word. It’s not going to make sense at first, but just hear me out and I promise it will be the best answer you receive today. You ready? The answer is…. Progress.. Confused?? It’s ok, either I didn’t understand this at first ! Think about it for a minute though and it all starts to click. Have you ever heard the story of the lotto winner who went from being flat broke to collecting millions of dollars, only to be severely depressed a few years later? Of course, you have! It's so popular they even made a reality tv series about it. Why do you think that occurrence is so common? The answer is progress. Or in their case, lack of progress. They simply peaked. They became millionaires and had nothing left to achieve. No reason to get up in the morning. No more goals to fulfill. No more purpose. They went from a life were progress was essential to live to a life with nothing to live for. Do you see the difference? Think about your own life for a minute. Ever have those lazy sunday’s when you get up, sit on the couch all day, and do nothing? How do you feel after that day? Now compare that to a day when you worked really hard on a project or successfully finished all of your goals for the day. How did you feel then? So why does progress make us happy? It all boils down to evolution. Whether we like it or not, we as humans are all hard-wired to evolve every day of our life. Evolution is essential to our survival. That evolution can take shape in many forms, but at the end of the day, that’s what progress really is, the evolution of ourselves. And when you are evolving, you are consciously taking control of your life and telling the universe “hold my beer, I got this!” Still not buying it? Go ahead and try me…. You might say, well family makes me happy! Of course, it does, but why is that? It’s because family is simply the evolution of your genes. It’s progress in the form of continuing your bloodline on for future generations. Some might say, I don’t care what you say, money does make me happy. Does the actual money make you happy? Or does the pursuit of the money make you happy? I would argue the latter. And why is that true? Because the pursuit of money is, you guessed it, progress. Hmmmmm….. I hope answer has made the point a bit clearer. The important take away here is that if you want to be happy, always look for ways to progress. Keep moving forward, one foot in front of the other. It does not matter how big or small of a progression you make, as long as it is in the right direction. ------------------------------------------------------------- background music: https://www.zapsplat.com/ background images: https://www.freepik.com/ Vector: https://www.freepik.com/ Sounds: https://www.zapsplat.com/ thumbnail image: https://www.freepik.com/ Everything else is royalty-free, commercially usable and resources that are no attribution is required. -------------------------------------------------------------

Is The Secret To A Happy Marriage In Your DNA?

04:46
Are some people genetically predisposed to stay happily married? Researchers at UC Berkeley have found a major clue in our DNA. Subscribe! http://bit.ly/1fUWHyY How Power Makes People Selfish: https://youtu.be/0vvl46PmCfE Robert Levenson and his team have found a link between relationship fulfillment and a variation of the serotonin transporter gene — referred to as the “short allele.” The gene is involved in the regulation of serotonin in the brain and can predict whether a person is oblivious or sensitive to the emotional climate of their relationship. The researchers have been following a group of 156 middle-aged and older couples since 1989. Every five years, the couples have come to UC Berkeley to report on their marital satisfaction and interact with one another in a lab setting while researchers code their conversations based on facial expressions, body language, tone of voice and topic of discussion. Scientists Discovered New Genes That Make Humans More Intelligent

01:57
If you aced your SATs, you can thank at least a few of your genes. Scientist analyzed the DNA of 78,308 people. They discovered a link between intelligence and 52 specific genes. The better individuals did in broad intelligence tests, the more frequently these genes appeared. But researchers aren't sure what the correlations mean because they don't know exactly what each gene does. Four of them control cell development. Three others control activities inside neurons. But it isn't clear how the others could make you smart. Scientists want to experiment with brain cells to find out. One method would take cells from people of differing intelligence and have those cells create neuron clusters. When you are grateful you can’t be in fear. When you are grateful, you can’t be in stress. So just be present. Be grateful. We’re lucky to be here.

DNA - Episode 1 of 5: The Secret of Life - PBS Documentary

53:01
The discovery of double-helix structure of DNA is to science what Mona Lisa is to painting. It has been called the single biggest discovery of all times. But it was not just stumbled upon - it was a race. Specifically, it was a race between two teams of young scientists working in Britain. Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins were trying to identify the structure by studying X-ray diffractions of the DNA molecule. But Jim Watson and Francis Crick studied a little bit of everything -- including, to the consternation of some, the work of their competitors. A few have gone so far as to accuse Watson of stealing Franklin's X-ray work. In any case, Waston and Crick's inquisitive working style ultimately allowed them to determine the DNA structure first, in 1953 -- an achievement that led to their Nobel Prize in 1962. Meanwhile, Franklin passed away in 1958 from cancer.

Shawn Achor on happiness as a competitive advantage

13:33
Happiness and positive psychology expert Shawn Achor talked about his research of (mostly unhappy) Harvard students. Achor’s research indicates that only ten percent of our happiness is shaped by our external world; ninety percent is influenced by our internal perspective. In studying high-achieving Harvard students, Achor realized that one common mistake we make is thinking that achieving our goals (be it losing ten pounds or getting a promotion) will make us happier. This doesn’t work because once we’ve accomplished our goal, the target moves and we find ourselves dissatisfied again. We need to flip the formula around – create happiness here and now because that is what will help us achieve our goals. Organizations are uniquely positioned to intervene on their workers’ behalf to make them happier and the result will be more productive, more resilient and, yes, happier, employees.
