Michelle's Day at Missouri Star Quilt Company

10:15
WARNING ! WARNING ! WARNING ! This definitely is not one of my videos on hiking or gear reviews. It's not even Hiker B S. It's giving my wife a little YouTube time showing her at Missouri Star Quilt Co. One of the largest and most popular quilters supply companies. Kinda like me going to REI or some other outfitters store and looking at EVERYTHING. I'm very blessed and she deserves her time. This video review is geared more for the entry level hiker/backpacker, or budget minded person assembling their gear but this has been a great piece of equipment over the years that has been used a lot so I thought I would pass my thoughts along on it. I've seen other comments saying they have pulled the grommets out of it, but when I was a young man I pulled the bumper half way off a 1965 Ford pickup too ! Maybe unnecessary force. Guadalupe Mountains McKittrick Ridge Part One

12:45
New Years Eve hike up McKittrick Ridge from the canyon below. A 2,600 ft climb that started out difficult and strenuous until the rain and high winds hit. Then it got exciting ! Not great on a trail that has quite a few precarious portions on the face of the mountain. Obviously I made it ! :-)

Gossamer Gear Murmur 36 Backpack is it waterproof?

05:35
If you saw the review video of my pack, I talked about testing to see if it truly is waterproof. Two days later, and here comes the rain. A great time to check it out with some scientific Bluecollar Backcountry testing. The results were pretty surprising. My Trail Company Backpack Light 50L

10:48
Kind of a lengthy review, but there's so much to talk about on this 2 lb. 50L frameless backpack. A revamp of the Jam 50 from the Golite days. Demetri Coupounas of Golite has opened My Trail Company and are making available many of the old Golite products with a few improvements, sold directly to us, saving the price of the middle man.
Gossamer Gear Murmur 36 HYPERLIGHT

10:54
Take a look at the Gossamer Gear Murmur 36 liter HYPERLIGHT backpack. AT 8.2 ounces without hipbelt, 13.2 ounces with the hip belt, this pack is insanely light and carries a light load unbelievably well. When full, the sit pad and load still places the weight on your hips as you would expect from conventional packs, making a light load even easier to carry. 40 Denier Robic nylon and 70 D Robic nylon are used to build this pack. A very generous mesh front pocket and tall collar means you can carry a fairly large load for such a light pack. 15 lb is the recommended load but can go up to 20 lb. If you know someone into UL or looking for a new pack, please share this with them and as always I appreciate you taking the time to watch. Guadalupe Mountains, Guadalupe Ridge Trail Part 1

12:52
To much rain and flooding for the Ouachita Trail in Oklahoma and Arkansas, so here's a last minute backup plan. The Guadalupe Ridge Trail in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Very seldom used trail that runs all the way to the Texas end of the mountains. If you look this trail up it says 8 to 12 miles....Don't believe it ! You can get 38 miles out of this one, "averaging" 6,000 ft.
Revelate Designs Terrapin Seat Pack "Fail"

02:15
I purchased the Terrapin 14L Seat Pack System to try on my mountain bike for a 300 mile trip coming up. Being a full suspension bike it seemed like the perfect option. On my first shakedown ride with a light to moderate load things went wrong quickly. I hope to get a replacement ASAP so I can still test this bag to see if it truly will hold up. The last thing I want to do is get a hundred miles from home and have this happen again. Revelate Designs does make a good product and I'm hoping this was just a one time thing. (See my hack video and Revelate Designs did have a recall after my hack video) Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more about this ride I'm preparing for. Don't forget THE BEST THING FOR YOUR INSIDE IS OUTSIDE !

Can You Really Save Weight Going Tubeless On A Fat Bike ?

08:03
Aside from the convenience of avoiding flat tires while mountain biking or fat biking, can you really save weight ? Going tubeless certainly has it's advantages like lower air pressure, creating more tread surface on the ground giving you better traction. No pinch flats from the tube literally being pinched when a tire compresses into the rim edge. and a good sealant quickly sealing reasonable size punctures. They can also be plugged on larger holes if caught quickly. "BUT" does it really save weight. The weight savings has been bragged on in mountain bike circles ever since tubeless tires started being used. A fat bike has really large tubes. How much weight can we save going tubeless with these huge tires. The results may surprise a lot of fat bike and mountain bike enthusiasts. My Motobecane has 26" x 4.00 tires and tubes. Let's see what happens. The Northeast Texas Trail / Bikepacking Day 3

11:28
A lot of bypassing has to be done because of the overgrowth this time of year and incessant rain and thunderstorms. The interactive map on the N.E.T.T. website isn't kept up to date so I've tried to show as much as possible with conditions as they are. The map shows total Mileage as 130 miles but at this time with the work arounds it's longer than stated. Day 3 shows from Clarksville to New Boston which is the official end of the Northeast Texas Trail. Stay tuned to see my total mileage on this trip and camping contacts along the way are listed below. There is still time to partner with me on this ride for Children's Cancer Research until the end of June, 2019. Thanks so very much to everyone who has supported this journey already. The Lake Mineral Wells Trailway / Fat bikepacking

17:24
I can never escape the high winds on a trip, but join me as I ride my fat bike to Lake Mineral Wells State Park in Texas, along the trailway that once was a railroad from the 1890s. It's said in 1899 that 33,000 people rode the train to the town of Mineral Wells to soak up the healing mineral water the town was famous for. After the building of the Baker Hotel it was common place for the rich, dignitaries, politicians, movie stars, and foreign travelers to visit here for the water. The Lake Mineral Wells Trailway is 20 miles long and the reclaimed railroad bed is covered with crushed limestone rock and makes a very easy trail to navigate. Like a Rails To Trail project, this trail is under the Texas Parks and Wildlife. It has water and restrooms at both ends and middle with gentle grades and curves through cattle and farming country. During the winter and colder weather you can pretty much take your pick of campsites in the park which also has hike, bike and equestrian trails. While there is primitive hike in campsites, bikes are not allowed on that trail. Northeast Texas Trail / Bikepacking Day 1

26:45
Day 1 of bikepacking the Northeast Texas Trail. I want to document as much of the trail as possible "for this time of year" for those who are interested in hiking or bikepacking as there are no complete videos of the Northeast Texas Trail as of June, 2019. Day 1 shows some of the worst conditions of my 7 day trip. We've had plenty of thunderstorms leading up to the time I leave, and 7 days of thunderstorms in the forecast. Having one of our granddaughters with cancer and spending time in Cooks Children's Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Hospital, I found out about the Great Cycle Challenge during the month of June and I knew I had to participate in this to help raise donations for the Children's Cancer Research Fund. A very worthy cause, and after feeling so helpless I knew this was something I could do. Thanks to many generous friends it's not in vain. Join me as I attempt to ride as much as is possible on the N.E.T.T. then continue on to the state line of Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas then return much of the same route. During the month of "June, 2019" you can partner with me by clicking on the link below Great Cycle Challenge and making a donation of any size if your heart leads you to, and it's much appreciated. A heartfelt thanks to those who have partnered with me so far ! Also below is the contacts and numbers for camping along the N.E.T.T. if you are interested. Again I truly want to thank everyone. Cast Iron Wednesday and Tomato Gravy

11:45
I remember as a young child my Grandmothers on both sides of my family were the best southern cooks. One of my favorite meals was breakfast with hot biscuits and tomato gravy. I'm going to cook up a dutch oven full of biscuits and a skillet full of good ol tomato gravy and I hope you enjoy. You'll see that I use metal utensils while cooking in our cast iron, AND tomatoes (acidic) !!!!!! But don't worry. Our cast is seasoned very well and it will not hurt any of it. Thanks for watching.

Bell Mountain Wilderness

20:19
Bell Mountain Wilderness is in the Mark Twain National Forest in southern Missouri. I've hung on to an article about this trail for two years, waiting for a chance to backpack here and after one of my sisters weddings in St. Louis I got my chance. It was worth the wait. It's a beautiful trail I highly recommend if you're ever in that area. The trail is 11.9 mile long but the rocky uphill makes it seem a little longer but nice mostly dirt tread trail on top with beautiful views in an oak and hickory forest.
Balmorhea State Park

09:17
Just a quick weekend road trip down to Balmorhea, and Balmorhea State Park in west Texas. Not our normal hiking video, but was still a lot of fun playing in the 15 million gallon a day San Solomon Spring with all the fish. "And" a quick 4 1/2 mi hike at Davis Mountains State Park.
INDIAN LODGE in the Davis Mountains State Park

12:56
Michelle and I ditched the tent for a chance to stay at the historic Indian Lodge built in the 30's by the Civilian Conservation Corps entirely from local materials. Located in Keesey Canyon at 5,000 ft. of elevation , the lodge was expanded in the mid 60's but we were able to snag reservations in the original section and it was so cool ! I hope you come along on our visit. Thanks for watching.

The Northeast Texas Trail / Bikepacking Day 2

11:04
Day 2 of my bikepacking trip for Children's Cancer Research Fund found me doing a lot of road riding, During the month of June much of the trail is grown up and close to impassable on a loaded bike, especially with weeks of rain and thunderstorms saturating the trail. I was able to access the trail from different areas and still ride what I could. Todays journey took me from Roxton to Clarksville Texas. New Boston to Texarkana / Riding For Children's Cancer Research

07:05
Day 4 of my bikepacking trip took me away from the Northeast Texas trail so I could finish my personal goal of reaching the state line in Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas. Almost NO shoulder on Hwy 82 ,and no tail light flashing to warn motorists (lost it on day 1) It got a little hairy at times. I did get to ride through a very weird and interesting section though !!! The last 3 days of my return will be condensed into 1 video so I don't drag this out to long. I know many people are interested in the N.E.T.T. so I've tried to show it as it is as of June, 2019 Thanks for watching and thanks to all my new subscribers/friends. https://greatcyclechallenge.com/Riders/TonyHyde New Boston camping contact David Turner (903) 227 3715
Revelate Designs Terrapin Seat Pack / Hook Hack

(About a month after my video Revelate Designs issued a recall) Revelate Designs reached out to me about warranty repair for the hook that broke on my new 14 L seat pack but I decided to fabricate my own hook design. Anyone can do this with a minimal amount of tools. I used a drill and a rotary tool ! It may not be beautiful but my new hooks will last the lifetime of the pack. Many thanks to Eric Parsons of Revelate Designs for reaching out to me but I like my DIY hook system. Farmersville, Texas On the Northeast Texas Trail

04:57
We took a little last minute road trip to Farmersville,Tx. 90 miles north of where Michelle and I live to take a look at the western terminus of the N.E.T.T. (Northeast Texas Trail) June 1st I will be leaving here to do a 300 mile yo-yo trip to raise funds for Children's Cancer Research Fund. I especially wanted to check out the parking situation as I will be parked there for close to a week. For long term parking contact the Farmersville Police Dept. with your itinerary, vehicle description, and contact number but park at your own risk. This was from last October when we hiked from Springer Mountain to Neels Gap. This is the only day I did in 360 because not everyone can take advantage of the 360 view. I hope you enjoy it but the video is somewhat grainy and blurry at the stitch lines which is typical of most 360 cameras unless you spend a thousand dollars of more. Washing My Goose Down Golite Z10 Sleeping Bag

07:30
Today I'm giving my trusty Golite Z10 Sleeping bag (850 fill) a much deserved cleaning. After years of use, sweat, oils from your skin, dust and dirt eventually affect your downs ability to loft properly and keep you warm to it's original ability/rating. It's a little nerve wracking because if something goes wrong, this bag cannot be replaced since Golite is no longer in business. MyTrail ( also Demetri Coupounas of Golite) does not sell sleeping bags. This is the best bag I have ever owned. I have the Enlightened Equipment Enigma quilt which is great, but for the really cold nights my Z10 delivers a toasty warm sleep every time. I'm sure some have washed their down in regular detergent but that will strip your down of their natural oils that protect the feathers. I chose NIKWAX to clean and treat my bag. I hope this helps if your down is ready to be cleaned and restored to it's full loft. Cold weather is on the way. Let's get ready for it because THE BEST THING FOR YOUR INSIDE IS OUTSIDE ! NIKWAX at REI where I got mine using dividends https://www.rei.com/product/890310/nikwax-down-wash-direct Although it's not available anymore, here is a description of my bag in Backpacker Magazine from 2013 https://www.backpacker.com/gear/golite-men-s-z10-three-season-sleeping-bag
